The Minnesota Association for the Education of Young Children (MnAEYC) is aware of the recent federal law enforcement actions that took place across early childhood programs and related services in the Twin Cities on April 28, 2026. These events have understandably caused concern, disruption, and distress for children, families, educators, and communities across our state.
At the center of our work is a deep commitment to the well-being, safety, and dignity of young children and those who care for them. We recognize that experiences involving a strong law enforcement presence—particularly in spaces designed for care, learning, and belonging—can be confusing, frightening, and potentially traumatic for young children and the adults who support them.
We also acknowledge the broader impact on communities, particularly those who may already experience heightened scrutiny, marginalization, or fear. It is essential that responses to any concerns—whether related to compliance, funding, or accountability—are carried out in ways that are equitable, respectful, and do not contribute to harm or stigma.
MnAEYC affirms the importance of accountability and integrity in publicly funded programs. At the same time, we believe that systems of oversight must be implemented through approaches that prioritize child well-being, uphold community trust, and reflect trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices.
We encourage policymakers, agencies, and leaders at all levels to consider the immediate and long-term impacts of enforcement actions on children, families, and the early childhood workforce. This includes ensuring that:
Children’s sense of safety is protected in all environments
Families experience continuity of care and clear, supportive communication
Providers are treated with fairness, due process, and respect
Communities are not disproportionately impacted or stigmatized
MnAEYC remains committed to supporting early childhood professionals, advocating for strong, equitable systems, and ensuring that all children and families in Minnesota have access to safe, stable, and high-quality care and education.
We will continue to listen, learn, and work alongside our members and partners to support healing, understanding, and constructive pathways forward.
