Conceptualizations of Nature-Based Early Learning in Early Childhood Teacher Education Programs in the United States

Educational Gardening

Indiana University Doctoral Candidate Maria Zoretic-Goodwin is conducting a research study on how undergraduate early childhood education programs in the United States address nature-based early learning in terms of where they locate its content in the curriculum, and the philosophical nature of its pedagogy.

Eligible respondents must be undergraduate-level educators who are 18 or older and teach content related to early childhood education. Early childhood education is defined as the period from birth through age eight (i.e., infancy through third grade). Teacher educators, regardless of their background in nature-based early learning, appointment type (i.e., adjunct or full-time), or program (i.e., early childhood education, elementary education, science education, or environmental education), are welcome to participate. The survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete, and ten randomly selected participants will win a $25 gift card!

Minnesota Cost of Care Study

First Children’s Finance’s (FCF) is conducting a Cost of Care study on behalf of the MN Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF).

This study is an opportunity to learn more about current conditions faced by child care providers across the state, that will lead to policy and advocacy goal development to bring stability and success to the field.

First Children’s Finance is surveying and interviewing child care business owners and administrators throughout the summer and fall. Having as many participants as possible will be critical to create an accurate picture of program revenues and costs for different program types, in different geographic areas across the state. Our questions are guided by our child care provider advisory group to ensure the data we collect is intelligible and meaningful to the field.

Unlike the market rate survey, this study will show not just the actual costs of providing child care, but also why they are unsustainable at current funding levels. It will provide DCYF with new information and the ability to take different approaches when setting CCAP rates and developing other supports.

The cost of care study survey will be emailed to the licensing point of contact for all licensed child care providers in August and will be open through September. Survey takers will also have the opportunity to participate in a compensated business interview. Please contact First Children’s Finance with any questions about the study and how to participate. UMN Twin Cities

Climate Education Research

The Center for Climate Literacy at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, in partnership with the University of Silesia, Poland, seeks K-6 educators to participate in a research study on how political changes impact climate education. Participants will be asked to complete a 30-minute survey of short answer, multiple choice, and Likert-scale questions. All responses will be deidentified. To be eligible, participants must have taught in a K-6 classroom in the 2024-2025 school year. Three participants who complete the survey will be randomly selected to receive a $50 gift card to Bookshop.org.

Willing participants can access the survey here:  https://z.umn.edu/ccl_climatesurvey

The survey will remain open until October 1, 2025. Questions can be directed to the study Co-PI, Dr. Nick Kleese, at klees023@umn.edu.

Digital Portfolio Apps

Do you use technology to communicate with the families in your classroom? We are conducting a nationwide survey on how early childhood educators share photos, videos,
and information with families using digital portfolio apps like Seesaw, Procare, Brightwheel and
more! Participants who complete the survey will have the option of being entered in a raffle for
one of 6 $25 gift cards. The survey takes about 20 minutes to complete. Gift cards will be
distributed no later than two weeks after the survey closes.
